I have had dogs most of my life for over 40 years and in all that time I believed that I was the leader of the pack – that they looked up to me as the leader. Never did it occur to me once that when I took my dogs for a walk that when it was in front of me that my dog was walking me. Never did I realise that when my dog brought their ball to me to play that it was telling me when we should play, not the other way round. Never did I realise that when I had friends or family over that my dog was in control by jumping all over them which in some cases friends and family stopped coming over.
Never did I realise that my dog told me when it wanted to be fed. Never did I realise that when my dog jumped on the couch it was establishing a leadership role. In fact, my dogs in their early years would chew my furniture, not come to me when called and just didn’t respect me. Never did I realise amongst other ubiquitous behaviours that all my dogs exhibited in all those years that I was being dictated in an ever-loving way that my dog was the patriarch/matriarch of the family. There is no secret formula to changing the behaviour of a dog, however, it does go a long way when we can begin to start to ‘speak to our dog in its own language - that’s where the transformation begins. Only then is it possible to teach an old dog new tricks. The process begins from our first meeting and ends with you the owner to continue the transformation until such time when both you and your beloved dog come to an agreement on how to harmoniously spend the rest of your life together.
